Single parents sharing houses, costs & support....

In today’s economic climate trying to find somewhere to live at an affordable price is growing harder by the day. If you are single and trying to find a rental property your chances are even less. With estimates predicting that rents will rise by more than 40% over the next 5 years, and with available accommodation at an all time low, the situation is only going to get worse.

SPACE4 is a national website connecting single mums and dads who wish to combine their financial and emotional resources by cohabiting and / or exchanging childcare support, and in doing so, access a higher standard of living for themselves and their children.

Founder Sophie Lee personally experienced the benefits of sharing a house with another single mum following her own separation four years ago.  “The experience for me was 100% positive.” she says,

“Having been faced with the prospect of only being able to afford to rent a tiny unit in a run-down area, together we were able to afford a large, modern house. Emotionally, the support of living with someone who totally understood what I was going through, and who I could compare notes with, was instrumental in me being able to get back on my feet sooner rather than later.”

In Australia, about one in four children will experience divorce. Research shows that costs relating to parenting across two families may be up to56% higher after separation, with most of these additional costs relating to housing. It is a time of enormous upheaval and change for the whole family, and will often result in a significant drop in the standard of accommodation each parent can afford.

House sharing is not just an option for renting single mums, but can also benefit single fathers with weekend custody, or lone parents struggling to keep up the mortgage payments on the family home.

The site also gives all users access to a variety of related information including advice on how to choose a house share family, moving house with children, and what you can do to improve your personal safety.
